I recently attended a medical conference where one of the scheduled speakers shared a message about mentoring. One statement she made particularly stood out to me: “You don’t have to change every life, just one.”

As I continued to reflect on those words, I realized that ultimately God is the only One who can truly change a person’s life. However, the speaker went on to explain that each of us has something valuable to offer others — insight, guidance, advice, and encouragement.

A few days later, my sister and I went out to dinner. Since the restaurant was not busy, we had the opportunity to spend some time talking with our server. I believe God often brings people into our lives for a reason, and this was one of those moments.

As we talked, my sister and I were able to encourage her in her educational pursuits. I was able to share some specific advice and practical suggestions that could help her accomplish her goals. It was a brief interaction, but one that took place in a very unconventional setting. It was the kind of encounter that could only happen through divine intervention.

That conversation strengthened my confidence I the direction God is leading my life. Many people may never walk through the doors of a church, but if we remain sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, we will begin to recognize the divine appointments God places in our paths as we go about our daily lives.

I do not know whether our server is a follower of Christ, nor will I likely ever know if she continues on in her educational journey. What I do know is that the encouragement she received that evening was exactly what she needed at that moment. It was not a coincidence. It was part of God’s design.

Sometimes we think ministry requires a platform, a pulpit, or a large audience. Yet God often works through simple conversations, unexpected encounters, and ordinary moments. We may never fully understand the impact of a kind word, a listening ear, or a timely piece of encouragement. Our responsibility is not to change lives-that is God’s work. Our responsibility is to be available, obedient and willing to be used by Him whenever He places someone in our path
